ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE
S.C.U.M Manifesto is a radical feminist manifesto by Valerie Solanas, published in 1967. It argues that men have ruined the world, and that it’s up to women to fix it
The piece centers around a woman taking charge. The character’s type of leadership is in the form of a furious and strategic warlord – a role in history dedicated to- and taken by men; men whom have been both feared and admired.
Since S.C.U.M is female; the piece has been scandalized; obscured and under threat since it was first published.
Valerie Solanas can be perceived in many ways; as a comedic and intellectual genius; as a criminally insane genius… I see her as a woman who was a revolutionary and a master comedian dangling from the gallows of our deepest darkness and light – A woman challenging the corruptness of patriarchy with masterful irony and force.
In today’s climate, it is fitting and necessary to revive this piece. S.C.U.M could serve as a great catalyst and a source of inspiration for many women and men. The intent is not to provoke the violence of Solanas’ language or character, but to raise questions and stimulate discussions.
We invite you to join us in this thoughtful social discourse.
