Artist Talk – Alexandra Carter
June 3, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Join us for a special discussion with Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Artist inside her exhibition “All gods are hot”
Sunday June 3rd, 12-1pm
Free Admission
Creating an immersive tableau of paintings on translucent drafting film, Carter suspends paintings from above to activate their double-sided nature and to confront viewers with figures that float and dance through the space. Puddles of colored ink and swaths of oil paint layered with photographic image transfers present an uncontained body, overflowing and interacting with the animal world, alluding to the hybrids of ancient mythologies and folklore.
Also on display will be a selection of the artist’s ongoing series using cranberry as a medium. The tart, highly pigmented fruit acts as a symbol of personal identity (the literal livelihood of her upbringing), and of tension with familial patriarchy. Using the concentrate and sediment from cranberry skin, the artist paints onto antique linen handkerchiefs, exploiting the staining effect of the pigment while signaling an intimate history with the body.
Street parking available but uber and lyft recommended. There is a paid lot by Electric Owl with an entrance off of Gardner. Do not park in the lot directly next to the gallery. Check signs.
“All gods are hot” runs through June 23, 2018.
