Join us for the opening of “All gods are hot,” a solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Carter. The show opens May 12 with a reception from 7-10pm, and runs through June 23, 2018.

Creating an immersive tableau of paintings on translucent drafting film, Carter suspends paintings from above to activate their double-sided nature and to confront viewers with figures that float and dance through the space. Puddles of colored ink and swaths of oil paint layered with photographic image transfers present an uncontained body, overflowing and interacting with the animal world, alluding to the hybrids of ancient mythologies and folklore.

Also on display will be a selection of the artist’s ongoing series using cranberry as a medium. The tart, highly pigmented fruit acts as a symbol of personal identity (the literal livelihood of her upbringing), and of tension with familial patriarchy. Using the concentrate and sediment from cranberry skin, the artist paints onto antique linen handkerchiefs, exploiting the staining effect of the pigment while signaling an intimate history with the body.

The opening will include a special cocktail by the artist featuring her signature pigment.
