SUMMARY:Vegan Gourmet Sushi Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\nRadiant Space is pleased to host our first Vegan Sushi Gourmet Dinner paired with artwork and an artist talk with Ibuki Kuramochi and Alexandra Carter. Leading up to this meal\, the two artists will spend three days sharing an open studio practice at Radiant Space\, creating artwork and a costume for Ibuki’s live performance Saturday\, August 3rd at 7:30 pm and for Alexandra’s exhibit in September. \nGuests are invited to view the two artists while they transform the space from 5-7pm on July 31st\, August 1st\, and 2nd. Alexandra Carter grew up on a cranberry farm and uses the juice as a source in her work and at times as a medium; elements of this fruit will be found in this meal\, as well as Japanese matcha\, which Ibuki has been incorporating into her work. \nIf you would like to attend both the meal and the performance on August 3rd\, please contact Radiant Space for a special package rate: info@radiantspacela.com \nPlease contact the gallery if you have any specific dietary needs. \nTickets must be ordered by August 1st. \nMenu: \nSushi Fusion: various styles of rolls made with vegan seafood including eel avocado\, salmon\, and tuna. (contains soy) \nKokkoro: Traditional Japanese appetizer made with vegetables and ground vegan crumbles (contains wheat and soy) \nJapanese Ceviche: A new version of the famous dish using a twist of Japanese fruits and seasonings (contains coconut) \nSummer Dessert: Tofu Cheesecake topped with a seasonal jam and traditional Japanese matcha (contains soy and nuts) \n$35 includes a beverage and collectible chopsticks \nABOUT: \nIBUKI KURAMOCHI \nBorn in Japan\, performance artist Ibuki Kuramochi specializes in artworks for exhibition; and also specializes in live performances combining her live painting and her Japanese Butoh dance. She studied Butoh dance at the world-renown Kazuo Ohno Butoh Dance Studio in Yokohama. She has held a deep interest and passion in painting since her childhood when she saw\, for the first time\, Ikuo Hirayama’s work about Silk Road Art. She works a lot with black and white\, which represent the beginning and nothingness. In her paintings\, we can find many themes like nature\, the animal world in opposition with the human world\, and eroticism. \nALEXANDRA CARTER \nMy work is an exploration of the psyche in the form of painting and drawing influenced by print media\, collage\, and performance. While riffing on themes of gender\, fairytale\, and masquerade\, I play with the relationship between control and catharsis\, visualizing the body coming out of itself\, exposing not only one’s guts but one’s internal state–one’s emotions\, one’s craziness–in a way that can seem both pleasurable and painful. I draw from my personal background (especially my origins on a cranberry farm in New England) as well as literature\, mythology\, dance\, and costume. My subject matter derives from a large archive of images which I collect and also create from my own performances. Recent interests include expressionist dance movements (specifically German Neuer Tanz and Japanese Butoh)\, mythological human-animal hybrids\, and the words of surrealist artist Unica Zürn. I use alternative media and surfaces to emphasize a visceral mark. The spill of ink on nonporous\, translucent drafting film (a.k.a. mylar) refers back to the body permeating beyond its own boundaries. The fluid is juxtaposed with collage elements; using solvents and other transfer methods I directly appropriate reference images from my archive. In recent installations\, I suspend works throughout a space\, making use of their translucency and presenting them as double-sided paintings that immerse the viewer in their own world. In other series\, I paint using cranberry juice\, which refers to my background and to the body in an abject narrative. I exploit the staining effect of the juice on antique linens or pillowcases. \nABOUT THE CHEF \nYasmina is a chef born and raised in Barcelona\, Catalonia. She has been cooking since she was a child. While studying to be a social worker\, she realized that culinary arts was her passion. She stopped studying culinary arts formally because it wasn’t aligned with her morals and ethics towards animals. She started exploring the vegan lifestyle and fell in love with the cuisine. \nSince then\, she has been working in NY running and working as a consultant in different kitchens in Manhattan. She also has her own project called Life is a Shiitake\, where she offers customized meal prep plans to fermented vegan cheese and yogurt. She is also always experimenting and learning techniques from different cuisine around the world.

SUMMARY:Ibuki Kuramochi Butoh Painting Performance “Midori”
DESCRIPTION:IBUKI KURAMOCHI’s performance “Midori” fuses the beauty and craft of live painting with the soul and rhythm of contemporary Japanese Butoh dance. The term “choreography” is problematic for Butoh. Choreography in the West implies a set sequence of movements. Butoh is very different – timing and movements are improvised. \n“Midori” is the Japanese word for “green.”  In this performance\, Ibuki will paint using Japanese Matcha powder mixed with water\, and also use Japanese sumi ink. \nMatcha is symbolic of Japan and also symbolic of nature and purity… \nPart of Ibuki’s costume will be made in collaboration with artist Alexandra Carter. The two of them will have an open studio practice leading up to the performance July 31st\, August 1st and August 2nd from 5-7pm at Radiant Space. Guests are invited to view the two artists while they transform the space.  \nDoors at 7:30pm \nShow at 8:00pm \n$17 advance \n$20 at the door (limited seating available please plan ahead) \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nIBUKI KURAMOCHI  \nBorn in Japan\, performance artist Ibuki Kuramochi specializes in artworks for exhibition; and also specializes in live performances combining her live painting and her Japanese Butoh dance. SUMMARY:It Was All A Dream Saturday Viewings
DESCRIPTION:Pro-skater Samy Baptista came out of a coma with the desire to put together an art show from the visions he saw from his hospital bed. Baptista is best known for “Fulfill the Dream\,” one of the most famous skate videos of all time. This film became a  stamp on the shift of skateboarding\,  directed and starring Chad Muska featuring Steve Olsen\, Peter Smulick\, Toan Nguyen\, Jesse Silvey\, Aaron Snyder\,  Brandon Turner and Baptista.  \nPulling back to his roots and calling on old and new friends\, Chad Muska\, Oscar Meza\, Kris Markovich\, Thatcher\, and Blikeme share their artwork along with a video installation by Michael Jon Leonard\, to tell Sammy Baptista’s spiritual awakening story. This show opens on June 15th to kick off Skate Day on June 21st. Events throughout the exhibition will ensue. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Burn Foundation.

SUMMARY:Candlelight Flow Yoga Class and Meditation With Celebrity Instructor
DESCRIPTION:Candlelight Flow with Meditation\n\n With life moving at an ever increasing pace\, it’s vital to our mental\, physical and emotional health to carve out time for self-care. This class aims to challenge (mind)\, alleviate (body) and inspire (soul). Prior yoga experience encouraged but not required. This is a safe space for you to honor whatever it is you need in the moment\, so if that means savasana for the entire class\, fantastic. This class encourages you to listen to your body and empowers you to trust your intuition. Please leave all judgments (especially self-judgments) at the door. \n\n\nTaught by celebrity yoga teacher Elizabeth Iacuzzi of EQI Yoga\, Liz has been teaching for over 10 years\, practicing for 20. \n\n\nBRING: — Yoga mat\, block (if you have)\, towel\, water\n\n**If you don’t have a mat\, let us know\, as our teacher has a limited amount of extras.\n\n\n\nABOUT:\n\n\nIn 2009\, 500-hr certified yoga instructor\, Elizabeth Iacuzzi\, established her mobile yoga company: EQI Yoga. Catering to Hollywood’s elite\, Liz works with clients on a one-on-one basis or in a private group setting. She has worked with everyone from top athletes (such as The Los Angeles Lakers) and entertainers (such as Britney Spears) to stay-at-home parents and corporate clients. Using a hands-on approach\, Liz tailors each class to the individual’s needs. Her aim is to rid clients of any physical and/or mental pains while inspiring them beyond their perceived limitations. Working with Liz offers the possibility of a longer\, healthier and happier life. \n\n\nAnyone new to or intimidated by yoga\, Liz’s initial words of advice are: Just show up. Showing up to your mat is often harder than anything that happens on it. It’s a personal journey\, not a competition. There’s no room for self-judgment or self-criticism here. Commit to improving your mental and physical states of being and watch the benefits spill over into every area of your life.\n\n\n\nRadiant Space\n1444 N Sierra Bonita Ave.\nLos Angeles\, CA 90046\n\nStreet Parking Available\nPaid Parking Lot off of Gardner Street

Gene Thompson. The duo uses movement and wearable sculptures to perform transformations and protection routines seeking ways to unstick themselves in a physical and energetic way. Using imagery of portals and transformations\, the performers work towards a reclamation of personal power. They explore the human response to living in and around the poisons of capitalism\, environmental destruction\, and systemic oppression. \nEmmons and Thompson are interested in exploring themes of land\, water and the dangerous isolation they see humans experiencing in the world.Their work is actively questioning how to regain our “force fields” and reclaim personal power. This is a story of adaptation\, grief\, protection and transformation in an age of fear. In a world where religion has co-opted spirituality\, our creative energy lives in danger of being lost. \nWhat factors constrain us from freedom? How do our bodies mirror our environment? How do we move forward in power together? Gene and Ru seek to open these questions and their complex solutions in this traveling performance piece. \nBios:\nH. Gene Thompson is an artist who uses soft sculpture installation and performance to highlight unseen narratives and to explore themes of closeness\, isolation\, confining factors such as gender\, social and economic oppression. Thompson’s wearable work is made up of colorful shapes working both as membranes to be resisted against and barriers to be broken through\, both separating and connecting people\, questioning human connectivity through wearable fabric sculptures. They are interested in bringing people together through inclusive events and performances in support of people who do not see themselves represented in the media bring work that is open for interpretations and speaks to the ideas of the “other”.\nThompson works to hold space that acts as a conduit for social emotional learning\, they have been responsible for public works at: New Hazlett Theater\, The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh\, Kelly Strayhorn Pittsburgh\, Laboratory Spokane WA\, Charles Adams Studio Project Lubbock TX\, AS220 Providence RI\, Neu Kirche Contemporary Art Center\, and Future Tenant Pittsburgh. BFA 2012\, CMU.\nwww.hgenethompson.com \nRu Emmons is a movement artist who strives to use their body as a tool for social change and personal transformation. Their movement style provides alternative ways to be human by engaging athletic contortion\, humor\, and contemporary improvisational methods to create images of connectivity\, discovery\, and dysphoria. Emmons explores what it means to be “the other” by testing their own physical limits\, curiously investigating the world around them\, and transforming body into object and object into body. Their work deals with themes of queerness\, living in a poison world\, and apocalyptic alternatives. Emmons has performed and collaborated with slowdanger\, Dave Bernabo\, and H. Gene Thompson at venues including the New Hazlett Theater\, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh\, 937 Gallery\, and Wood Street Gallery in Pittsburgh\, PA.
