SUMMARY:Alchemy Tunnel Saturday Viewings
DESCRIPTION:ALCHEMY TUNNEL is an inviting and transformative art installation opening at Radiant Space on October 5th\, 2019. Similar to repeating mantras in meditation\, Laurie Shapiro uses repetitive imagery from her imagination and nature to create this cohesive and fully immersive experience. \nShapiro – a Jewish female artist\, conceptualized this sukkot-like rainbow-colored installation at the start of 2019 and has been working on it all year. “Creating artwork is meditative and healing for me; I hope people give themselves the space to find peace and clarity inside of this work\,” says Shapiro of her intentions. \nThe main components of this installation are six “rainbow panels” which wrap from one wall\, over the ceiling\, to the other wall\, forming a tunnel. Each panel is a different main color (red\, orange\, yellow\, green\, blue\, purple) and connects as a single piece. Shapiro’s process involves screen printing drawn images\, sewing\, and layers of water-based paints. Lighting in this installation is sponsored by LIFX – wifi linked\, color-changing bulbs which enable the landscape of ALCHEMY TUNNEL to change over seconds. \nA mini bazaar will house limited edition prints\, handmade goods by the artist\, and behind-the-scenes documentation. Hollywood screenwriter\, director\, and photographer Pen Densham documented Shapiro’s creative journey and believes it is “An enveloping experience that touches the unconscious. It is almost like stepping into a living dream.” (Photograph by Pen Densham) \nALCHEMY TUNNEL will start its journey at Radiant Space\, a multimedia gallery in Los Angeles\, and from there will tour different cities. Shapiro’s work has caught the eyes of thousands. We are thrilled to have her back at Radiant Space and excited about all of the special events including sound baths\, yoga classes\, meals\, talks\, and performances curated by Olivia Mia Orozco that will all occur inside the installation. \nOpen for free Saturdays 12-3 pm and by appointment. Ticketed special events throughout the exhibition. \nGuests must take off their shoes to enter\, or put on shoe protectors. No high heels inside. \nOctober 11th 8:00pm- Comedy Performance with Interviews from Shapiro\nOctober 19th 8:00pm- La Sandunga Live Theater Performance\nOctober 20th 6:00pm and 7:30pm- Modular Sound Baths\nNovember 13th- 8:00pm- Gaudi Themed Vegan Spanish Meal\nNovember 16th 8:00pm- Georgi Kay Musical Performance \n

SUMMARY:"Phenomena" Closing Party for Daniel Adkins
DESCRIPTION:Radiant Space is pleased to present a pop up art event at a new location\, Cromastudios. Just in time for Halloween\, Daniel Adkins presented his darker artwork in a powerful show embracing the shadow. Join us for the last night of this beautiful exhibition featuring live acoustic music. \n“I have been drawn to the spirit world for as long as I can remember. As a child growing up in a small city in southern Virginia\, I became fascinated with ghost stories\, grim folklore\, and Ouija boards. Over time\, this obsession morphed into an earnest desire to learn as much as possible about the occult. As an artist\, I have focused on these themes in order to communicate the side of the emotional spectrum that many shy away from: grief\, loss\, pain\, and existential terror. My paintings are meant to depolarize dark from light\, narrowing the space between the two by incorporating the same playfulness\, excitement\, and whimsy that I felt as a child reading spooky stories. I believe that there is life-affirming beauty in darkness and only by embracing the shadow can we fully understand our light.” \nBio \n Daniel Adkins was born in Martinsville\, Virginia in 1989. He became interested in creative expression from an early age\, but focused mainly on drawing and songwriting in his adolescence. Daniel began painting in adulthood and developed a distinctive style early on in his work. He currently resides in Los Angeles\, California with his partner Liz and their son Wolfe. \nLocated near Koreatown and Downtown LA (very Central) Entrance through the alley. \nCromastudios \n2512 James M Wood Blvd LA 90006 \nProcessed with VSCO with a6 preset

SUMMARY:The Vibration of Color: A Soundbath Inside Alchemy Tunnel
DESCRIPTION:The Vibration of Color\nAlign with your Alchemy Tunnel by tapping into the pulsating rainbow in and outside of you. We are using the inspiration that Laurie’s new work summoned in us to create a chakra-balancing sequence. It will not focus on any one center\, but on all seven wheels of life. Feel how sound vibrations emulate color vibrations and allow us to feel more immersed in color\, sound\, and our personal interaction with the frequency of our surroundings.

DESCRIPTION:Show Opening\nOctober 5th- November 23rd \nALCHEMY TUNNEL is an inviting and transformative art installation opening at Radiant Space on October 5th\, 2019. Similar to repeating mantras in meditation\, Laurie Shapiro uses repetitive imagery from her imagination and nature to create this cohesive and fully immersive experience. \nShapiro – a queer Jewish female artist\, conceptualized this sukkot-like rainbow-colored installation at the start of 2019 and has been working on it all year. It is almost like stepping into a living dream.” \nALCHEMY TUNNEL will start its journey at Radiant Space\, a multimedia gallery in Los Angeles\, and from there will tour different cities. Shapiro’s work has caught the eyes of thousands. We are thrilled to have her back at Radiant Space and excited about all of the special events including sound baths\, yoga classes\, meals\, talks\, and performances curated by Olivia Mia Orozco that will all occur inside the installation. \nOpen for free Saturdays 12-3pm and by appointment. Ticketed special events throughout the exhibition. \nOctober 11th 8:00pm- Comedy Performance with Interviews from Shapiro\nOctober 19th 8:00pm- La Sandunga Live Theater Performance\nOctober 20th 6:00pm and 7:30pm- Modular Sound Baths\nNovember 13th- 8:00pm- Gaudi Themed Vegan Spanish Meal\nNovember 16th 8:00pm- Georgi Kay Musical Performance

SUMMARY:Vegan New England Dinner Inside Alexandra Carter's Latest Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate gourmet dinner inside Alexandra Carter’s latest exhibition\, “Berries for Baubo.” Carter comes from a family of cranberry farmers in New England. The berry is a repeated icon in the artist’s visual lexicon: the fruit is like a garnet ambrosia\, an exalted potion that seeps through all the works and intoxifies its subjects. Photographs of berries and botanical illustrations replace and adorn parts of the female body. Breasts become globular appendages that bubble up\, guzzle down\, shrivel\, leak\, and lactate. Carter also uses cranberry as a medium; in some of the works the juice stains antique linens\, connecting the mark to an intimate bodily history. \nAppetizers: \n-Vegan clam chowder \n-Lobstah Cold Cake \nMain:  \n– Baked mac and cheese  \nDessert: \n-Apple Loaf with cranberries  \nBeverages: \n-Cranberry Cocktail  \nPlease email info@radiantspacela.com to inform us of any food allergies.\nTicket sales close September 17th. \nABOUT \n\nAlexandra Carter’s latest body of work explores fertility in terms of agriculture and the female body. Her paintings\, made with layers of puddled pigment and collaged imagery on translucent drafting film\, mimic explosive\, liquid bodies splashing out of their own skins. Influenced by folklore and mythology\, she quotes deities of jest\, filth\, lust\, and light. Baubo\, the exhibition’s fitting namesake\, personifies the celebratory nature of the approaching harvest season\, alongside a certain burlesque attitude. Women perform a sumptuous dance between maiden\, mother\, and crone. Wanton figures of myth and fairytale embroil themselves within the monstrous feminine and the maternal grotesque.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlexandra Carter (b. 1985 in Boston) lives and works in Los Angeles. She received an MFA from Goldsmiths University of London in 2015 and a BA from Rhodes College in Memphis in 2009. “Berries for Baubo” is Carter’s second solo show with Radiant Space\, following “All gods are hot” in 2018. Other solo exhibitions include Fusion Gallery (Turin\, Italy)\, Southfork (Memphis)\, Projecto’ace Foundation (Buenos Aires)\, and Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Carter was selected for residency projects at KulturKontakt Austria (Vienna)\, Qwatz (Rome)\, Graniti Murales (Sicily)\, Vice~Versa Foundation (Goa\, India)\, and RECSIM (Jashipur\, India)\, Galerija-Muzej Lendava (Slovenia)\, and the Kentucky Foundation for Women.

SUMMARY:Vegan Gourmet Sushi Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\nRadiant Space is pleased to host our first Vegan Sushi Gourmet Dinner paired with artwork and an artist talk with Ibuki Kuramochi and Alexandra Carter. Leading up to this meal\, the two artists will spend three days sharing an open studio practice at Radiant Space\, creating artwork and a costume for Ibuki’s live performance Saturday\, August 3rd at 7:30 pm and for Alexandra’s exhibit in September. \nGuests are invited to view the two artists while they transform the space from 5-7pm on July 31st\, August 1st\, and 2nd. Alexandra Carter grew up on a cranberry farm and uses the juice as a source in her work and at times as a medium; elements of this fruit will be found in this meal\, as well as Japanese matcha\, which Ibuki has been incorporating into her work. \nIf you would like to attend both the meal and the performance on August 3rd\, please contact Radiant Space for a special package rate: info@radiantspacela.com \nPlease contact the gallery if you have any specific dietary needs. \nTickets must be ordered by August 1st. \nMenu: \nSushi Fusion: various styles of rolls made with vegan seafood including eel avocado\, salmon\, and tuna. (contains soy) \nKokkoro: Traditional Japanese appetizer made with vegetables and ground vegan crumbles (contains wheat and soy) \nJapanese Ceviche: A new version of the famous dish using a twist of Japanese fruits and seasonings (contains coconut) \nSummer Dessert: Tofu Cheesecake topped with a seasonal jam and traditional Japanese matcha (contains soy and nuts) \n$35 includes a beverage and collectible chopsticks \nABOUT: \nIBUKI KURAMOCHI \nBorn in Japan\, performance artist Ibuki Kuramochi specializes in artworks for exhibition; and also specializes in live performances combining her live painting and her Japanese Butoh dance. She studied Butoh dance at the world-renown Kazuo Ohno Butoh Dance Studio in Yokohama. She has held a deep interest and passion in painting since her childhood when she saw\, for the first time\, Ikuo Hirayama’s work about Silk Road Art. She works a lot with black and white\, which represent the beginning and nothingness. In her paintings\, we can find many themes like nature\, the animal world in opposition with the human world\, and eroticism. \nALEXANDRA CARTER \nMy work is an exploration of the psyche in the form of painting and drawing influenced by print media\, collage\, and performance. While riffing on themes of gender\, fairytale\, and masquerade\, I play with the relationship between control and catharsis\, visualizing the body coming out of itself\, exposing not only one’s guts but one’s internal state–one’s emotions\, one’s craziness–in a way that can seem both pleasurable and painful. I draw from my personal background (especially my origins on a cranberry farm in New England) as well as literature\, mythology\, dance\, and costume. My subject matter derives from a large archive of images which I collect and also create from my own performances. Recent interests include expressionist dance movements (specifically German Neuer Tanz and Japanese Butoh)\, mythological human-animal hybrids\, and the words of surrealist artist Unica Zürn. I use alternative media and surfaces to emphasize a visceral mark. The spill of ink on nonporous\, translucent drafting film (a.k.a. mylar) refers back to the body permeating beyond its own boundaries. The fluid is juxtaposed with collage elements; using solvents and other transfer methods I directly appropriate reference images from my archive. In recent installations\, I suspend works throughout a space\, making use of their translucency and presenting them as double-sided paintings that immerse the viewer in their own world. In other series\, I paint using cranberry juice\, which refers to my background and to the body in an abject narrative. I exploit the staining effect of the juice on antique linens or pillowcases. \nABOUT THE CHEF \nYasmina is a chef born and raised in Barcelona\, Catalonia. She has been cooking since she was a child. While studying to be a social worker\, she realized that culinary arts was her passion. She stopped studying culinary arts formally because it wasn’t aligned with her morals and ethics towards animals. She started exploring the vegan lifestyle and fell in love with the cuisine. \nSince then\, she has been working in NY running and working as a consultant in different kitchens in Manhattan. She also has her own project called Life is a Shiitake\, where she offers customized meal prep plans to fermented vegan cheese and yogurt. She is also always experimenting and learning techniques from different cuisine around the world.

SUMMARY:Ibuki Kuramochi Butoh Painting Performance “Midori”
DESCRIPTION:IBUKI KURAMOCHI’s performance “Midori” fuses the beauty and craft of live painting with the soul and rhythm of contemporary Japanese Butoh dance. The term “choreography” is problematic for Butoh. Choreography in the West implies a set sequence of movements. Butoh is very different – timing and movements are improvised. \n“Midori” is the Japanese word for “green.”  In this performance\, Ibuki will paint using Japanese Matcha powder mixed with water\, and also use Japanese sumi ink. \nMatcha is symbolic of Japan and also symbolic of nature and purity… \nPart of Ibuki’s costume will be made in collaboration with artist Alexandra Carter. The two of them will have an open studio practice leading up to the performance July 31st\, August 1st and August 2nd from 5-7pm at Radiant Space. Guests are invited to view the two artists while they transform the space.  \nDoors at 7:30pm \nShow at 8:00pm \n$17 advance \n$20 at the door (limited seating available please plan ahead) \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nIBUKI KURAMOCHI  \nBorn in Japan\, performance artist Ibuki Kuramochi specializes in artworks for exhibition; and also specializes in live performances combining her live painting and her Japanese Butoh dance.
