As a child growing up in a small city in southern Virginia\, I became fascinated with ghost stories\, grim folklore\, and Ouija boards. Over time\, this obsession morphed into an earnest desire to learn as much as possible about the occult. As an artist\, I have focused on these themes in order to communicate the side of the emotional spectrum that many shy away from: grief\, loss\, pain\, and existential terror. My paintings are meant to depolarize dark from light\, narrowing the space between the two by incorporating the same playfulness\, excitement\, and whimsy that I felt as a child reading spooky stories. I believe that there is life-affirming beauty in darkness and only by embracing the shadow can we fully understand our light. \nBio \n Daniel Adkins was born in Martinsville\, Virginia in 1989.
